Pope Leo XIV and Buzz Aldrin Reflect on Apollo 11’s Legacy, 56 Years Later

Vatican City: More than half a century after humanity first set foot on the moon, Pope Leo XIV held a heartfelt conversation with astronaut Buzz Aldrin, one of the pioneering figures of NASA’s Apollo 11 mission. The Holy See Press Office announced the dialogue on Sunday evening through an official message on Telegram.

It was 56 years ago, on July 20, 1969, that the world stood still as Neil Armstrong became the first human to walk on the moon, followed closely by Aldrin. Launched on July 16, Apollo 11 remains one of humankind's greatest scientific and exploratory triumphs.

In their conversation, Pope Leo and Aldrin revisited the magnitude of that historic feat. The Pontiff spoke of it as a profound witness to the ingenuity of the human spirit. Drawing on Psalm 8, the two reflected on the awe-inspiring beauty and mystery of Creation the grandeur of the universe and the delicate balance of life itself.

Before concluding the call, Pope Leo imparted his blessing to Aldrin, his wife Anca, their loved ones, and the many who supported the mission’s success.

Aldrin later shared his gratitude on social media:

“Anca and I were deeply moved to receive the highest blessing from His Holiness, Pope Leo XIV, on this 56th anniversary of Apollo 11. It was an unforgettable honor. We prayed together for good health, long life, and the well-being of all humanity.”

Commemorating the moon landing anniversary, Pope Leo also took time after reciting the Sunday Angelus to visit the Vatican Observatory’s domes at Castel Gandolfo, exploring the very telescopes that symbolize the Church’s enduring relationship with science and the stars.

Meanwhile, Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni informed the press that the Holy Father would extend his stay at Castel Gandolfo through Tuesday. Originally scheduled to return to the Vatican on Sunday, the Pope will now travel back on Tuesday evening.
