Pope Leo XIV Pays Tribute to Cardinal Vingt Trois as a Faithful Pastor of Paris

Vatican City: Pope Leo XIV has paid a heartfelt tribute to Cardinal André Vingt-Trois, Archbishop Emeritus of Paris, who passed away on July 18 at the age of 82. In a message of condolence addressed to Cardinal Laurent Ulrich, the current Archbishop of Paris, the Pope described the late prelate as a “good and zealous shepherd” who faithfully served the Church and its people.

Cardinal Vingt-Trois led the Archdiocese of Paris for twelve years, earning widespread respect for his pastoral commitment and leadership. Reflecting on his passing, Pope Leo acknowledged the sorrow felt by the Church in France, expressing spiritual closeness and offering prayers for those mourning his loss, including the clergy, the faithful, and his family.

The Pope extended special recognition to the caregivers of Maison Marie-Thérèse, who accompanied the Cardinal during his final illness. He noted the Cardinal’s endurance in suffering and united it with the Passion of Christ, praying that he may now find rest and light in the presence of the Risen Lord.

In his condolence message, Pope Leo expressed hope that Cardinal Vingt-Trois would receive “the reward promised by the Divine Master to faithful servants,” and offered his Apostolic Blessing to all those affected by the Cardinal’s death.

The funeral Mass for the Cardinal will be held at 10 a.m. on July 23 at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, presided over by Cardinal Ulrich. To facilitate the solemn liturgy, the cathedral will be closed to general visitors until 2:30 p.m. that afternoon.

Cardinal André Vingt-Trois was a towering figure in the French Church, having served as president of the Bishops' Conference of France from 2007 to 2013. His contributions to the Church and nation have left an enduring legacy of pastoral care, faith, and leadership.
