Mananthavady: In a proud moment of recognition, the Mananthavady Diocese has been awarded the title of “Best Diocese in Anti-Drug Activities” by the KCBC Anti-Liquor State Committee, applauding its impactful and consistent efforts in promoting a drug-free Kerala. Among the many dioceses operating under the Syro-Malabar, Syro-Malankara, and Latin rites, Mananthavady stood out for its strategic, grassroots-level interventions and deep-rooted social commitment.
The award was presented by Bishop Mar Sebastian Vaniyapurakkal during the state-level representatives' gathering at the Pastoral Orientation Centre in Ernakulam, where delegates from various dioceses and parish-level workers assembled. The diocese earned the honour through a multi-pronged approach that included widespread educational outreach, targeted youth campaigns, and collaborative programs with local law enforcement, particularly the Kaval Police, to build awareness in schools and communities.
A major pillar of Mananthavady’s anti-drug mission has been the mobilization of youth, families, and church organizations through social media engagement, school clubs, and student workshops. These efforts have not just informed but actively empowered communities to identify and resist the lure of narcotic substances. The diocese has integrated anti-drug themes into school curricula and pastoral missions, creating long-term impact.
What sets this initiative apart is its emphasis on education over enforcement. Rather than relying on religious pressure, the diocese has championed socially conscious awareness campaigns aimed at instilling a sense of responsibility and resilience among young people. The movement has inspired students and parish youth to become ambassadors of sobriety and mental wellness.
This recognition is not just a trophy it marks a culmination of years of dedicated work at the parish level, sustained by visionary leadership and collective commitment. It also places the Mananthavady Diocese in the spotlight within the Kerala Church for setting an exemplary model of Church-led social activism. With this acknowledgment from KCBC, the diocese is expected to strengthen its role further in safeguarding communities against substance abuse and promoting healthy, responsible living.
