Pope Leo XIV: Elderly Are Beacons of Hope for New Generations

Vatican City: Marking the Fifth World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly, Pope Leo XIV hailed the older generation as vital "witnesses of hope" who illuminate the path for youth in a world often darkened by despair.

Addressing the faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square after the Sunday Angelus, the Pope drew attention to this year’s theme, “Blessed is the one who does not lose hope.” He emphasized the enduring spiritual strength of grandparents and the elderly, urging families and communities not to abandon them, but to build “a covenant of love and prayer” with them.

“They are more than memories; they are living bridges to the future,” the Pope said, calling on society to cherish and listen to their wisdom.

Turning to the vibrant presence of international youth gathered in Rome for the Jubilee of Youth, the Holy Father extended a heartfelt welcome. “May this pilgrimage be a transformative encounter with Christ, renewing your faith and commitment to live with integrity,” he told them.

In linking the vitality of the youth with the enduring faith of the elderly, Pope Leo XIV painted a picture of generational unity built on mutual respect, prayer, and shared Christian hope.
