Kochi — Professor M. K. Sanu, one of the most revered figures in Malayalam literature and social thought, passed away in Kochi today, Saturday, August 2, at the age of 97. A celebrated writer, biographer, literary critic, teacher, and humanist, his death marks the end of an era for Kerala’s cultural and intellectual community.
Born on October 27, 1926, in Thumpoly near Alappuzha, Sanu's life spanned nearly a century of Kerala's cultural and political evolution. He began his career as a lecturer in Malayalam and rose to become a professor at prestigious institutions like Sree Narayana College and Maharaja’s College, Ernakulam. He retired from active teaching in 1983 but continued to influence public thought through his writing, speeches, and activism.
Professor Sanu authored over 36 books, including acclaimed biographies, critical essays, and studies on Malayalam literature and socio-political reformers. His biography of Vaikom Muhammad Basheer, titled "Basheer: Ekantha Veedhiyile Avadhoothan," earned him the Sahitya Akademi Award. His other major accolades include the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award, the Ezhuthachan Puraskaram in 2013, the P. Kesavadev Literary Award, and the Mathrubhumi Literary Award in 2017 for lifetime achievement.
A dedicated disciple of Sree Narayana Guru’s philosophy, Sanu actively promoted progressive thought. He served as the president of the Purogamana Kala Sahitya Sangham, an organization of left-leaning writers and artists, and headed the Sree Narayana Study Centre at the University of Kerala. He also held the Sree Narayana Chair at Mahatma Gandhi University in Kottayam.
Apart from his literary contributions, Sanu was known for his social commitment. He was involved in establishing Mithram, a school for children with intellectual disabilities, and served as a member of the International Body for Human Rights. His public life also included a term as a Member of the Legislative Assembly representing the Ernakulam constituency.
Sanu was widely respected for his honesty, clarity of thought, and unflinching stands on social justice. In 2019, he resigned from the Vayalar Ramavarma Literary Award Trust, which he had chaired for years, citing pressure from certain lobbies regarding award selections—an act that underlined his ethical standards and independence.
His death has triggered a wave of mourning across Kerala. Writers, academicians, political leaders, and ordinary citizens are paying tribute to a man who inspired generations not just through his writings but also through his principled life. Cultural organizations and literary bodies are expected to organize memorial events in the coming days.
Professor M. K. Sanu’s life was an embodiment of intellectual honesty, literary excellence, and public service. His influence on Malayalam literature and Kerala’s social landscape will remain indelible for years to come.
