Kulgam, Jammu and Kashmir: The ongoing anti-terror operation in the Akhal area of Kulgam district has entered its ninth consecutive day, marking one of the longest such encounters in recent years. Launched on August 1 following specific intelligence inputs about terrorist presence, Operation Akhal has seen intense exchanges of fire between security forces and militants entrenched in dense forest terrain.
Two Indian Army soldiers, Lance Naik Pritpal Singh and Sepoy Harminder Singh, lost their lives after sustaining injuries during heavy overnight gunfire. Reports suggest that between four and eleven other personnel have been injured over the course of the operation, with the figures varying across sources.
Security forces have confirmed the killing of at least one militant, while some reports indicate two to three fatalities on the militant side. The identities and group affiliations of the slain are yet to be officially established.
The operation has posed significant challenges due to the topography, with thick forests and possible hideouts slowing the search and clearance process. To counter these difficulties, the forces have deployed drones, attack helicopters, and para-commandos.
High-level monitoring of the mission is being conducted by Jammu and Kashmir Police Chief Nalin Prabhath and Northern Army Commander Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma. The Chinar Corps has paid tribute to the fallen soldiers and reiterated its commitment to continue the operation until all threats are neutralized.
Local residents of Akhal village have reportedly been evacuated as the area remains under heavy shelling and gunfire. Despite the prolonged duration and difficult conditions, security forces maintain that the operation will continue until the area is fully secured.
