New Delhi: India will celebrate its 79th Independence Day on August 15, 2025, commemorating the nation’s freedom from British rule in 1947. While it marks the 78th anniversary of independence, the event is counted as the 79th celebration since the first Independence Day was observed in 1947.
The main ceremony will be held at the Red Fort in New Delhi, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hoist the tricolour and address the nation. The event will include a Guard of Honour, a 21-gun salute, and the national anthem. This year, 50 sanitation workers will be honored as special guests in recognition of their service.
Public entry to the Red Fort celebrations will be available through both online and offline bookings. Online reservations open on August 13 via the Ministry of Defence portals, while offline tickets can be purchased from August 10 to 12 at designated government offices. Ticket prices range between ₹20 and ₹500. The program starts at 7:30 AM, with attendees advised to arrive by 6:30 AM. Delhi Metro services will start early at 4:00 AM, and Lal Qila and Chandni Chowk will be the nearest stations. A full-dress rehearsal will take place on August 13, with traffic restrictions in place.
Nationwide, the “Har Ghar Tiranga” campaign returns, encouraging citizens to display the national flag at their homes and earn certificates and badges. Other events include a military band concert in Prayagraj by the Dogra and J\&K Rifles Regimental bands at the Ganga–Yamuna confluence.
August 15 is also celebrated as a day of independence or national pride in other countries, including South and North Korea, the Republic of the Congo, Bahrain, and Liechtenstein.
In 2025, India’s Independence Day celebrations will honor the past, celebrate progress, and reaffirm unity across the nation.
