Modi Vows to Shield Farmers, Boost Self-Reliance Amid U.S. Tariff Escalation

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi used his Independence Day address from the Red Fort to reaffirm his government’s commitment to protecting farmers and pushing for self-reliance, as India faces rising trade tensions with the United States. Speaking for nearly two hours, Modi pledged to safeguard the livelihoods of farmers, fishermen, and cattle rearers, stating he would “stand like a wall” against any policy that harms them.

The Prime Minister called for expanding the “Atmanirbhar Bharat” vision, urging domestic production of fertilizers, semiconductor chips, jet engines, and electric vehicle batteries. He announced that India’s first made-in-India semiconductor chips would be available by the end of the year. Modi also revealed that Goods and Services Tax (GST) rates will be reduced from October to spur consumption and domestic demand.

The remarks came amid heightened trade frictions with Washington. The U.S., under President Donald Trump, recently imposed an additional 25 percent tariff on Indian goods, raising some duties to as high as 50 percent. The move, linked to India’s continued import of Russian oil, threatens about \$87 billion worth of exports in sectors such as textiles, jewelry, and footwear. Industry groups warn that order cancellations are already underway, with electronics exports alone facing potential losses of up to \$30 billion.

Diplomatic talks between the two countries have stalled over disagreements on market access and energy procurement. Reports indicate India has leaned toward strengthening ties with BRICS nations and exploring alternative trade partners. While some sources suggested a pause in certain defense purchases from the U.S., the Indian Defence Ministry denied any such decision.

Farmers’ groups, including the Sanyukt Kisan Morcha, have condemned the tariffs as an “economic embargo” and called for nationwide protests. The debate over whether India should adopt more protectionist policies or focus on agricultural modernization has intensified in political and economic circles.

Looking ahead, Modi is set to launch the National Mission on Natural Farming on August 23. With a budget of ₹2,481 crore, the program aims to promote sustainable agricultural practices across 750,000 hectares and benefit 10 million farmers. This initiative is expected to provide long-term support to rural communities while reducing dependency on imports.

By combining protective measures for the agrarian sector with fiscal relief and technological ambitions, the government aims to cushion India’s economy against external shocks and chart a course toward greater self-reliance. The coming months will test how effectively these strategies can balance domestic priorities with the challenges of a shifting global trade environment.
