4th National March for Life Unites Faiths in Defence of Human Dignity

Bangalore became a national focal point for the pro-life movement on August 9, 2025, as the 4th National March for Life drew participants from across India and diverse faith traditions. Hosted by Archbishop Peter Machado of Bangalore, Vice President of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI), the event affirmed the value of human life at every stage—from conception to natural death.

The march brought together Christians of various denominations, Muslim leaders, Sikh representatives, and members of other communities, reflecting a shared moral responsibility that transcends religious boundaries. Alongside the march, a pro-life exhibition showcased educational materials, testimonies, and creative displays highlighting the dignity of life and the need to protect it.

Among the prominent leaders present was Syro-Malabar Archbishop Andrews Thazhath of Trichur, President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI), whose leadership has been instrumental in fostering unity among dioceses. Archbishop Francis Kalist of Pondicherry-Cuddalore, Episcopal Advisor to CHARIS India and CBCI In-charge for Pro-Life, attended with a strong pastoral appeal for a “culture of life.”

Archbishop Machado welcomed delegates to Bangalore, calling the city a meeting point of cultures and faiths. Other key contributors included Cyril John of CHARIS International; Victor Joans, National Coordinator of CHARIS India; Sr. Paulina Melite MSMI, CHARIS India Pro-Life Coordinator; and Ajin Joseph, CHARIS Asia Youth Coordinator, who composed the official March for Life theme song.

In his keynote address, Archbishop Kalist stressed that defending life is a universal human duty, not restricted to any single faith. He urged collaboration among bishops, clergy, religious communities, educators, and the faithful to promote life through initiatives like CHARIS India’s *Flesh & Bones* and *Vita* formation programmes.

He appealed for protection of the unborn, the elderly, the sick, and the vulnerable, warning against abortion, euthanasia, and neglect. Addressing the laity, he highlighted their essential role in initiating and sustaining the March for Life, encouraging them to act as “fishers of families” by fostering respect for life within homes and communities.

The multi-faith representation underscored that threats to life—ranging from abortion to human trafficking—demand collective action. March concluded with participants committing to defend the most vulnerable members of society.

Archbishop Kalist announced that the 5th National March for Life will be hosted by Archbishop George Antonysamy of Chennai on August 9, 2026, continuing the mission of uniting people of all faiths in protecting human dignity.
