“Do Not Be Discouraged by Crises,” Urges Mar Raphael Thattil at Syro-Malabar Synod

Kakkanad, Kerala: The second session of the 33rd Synod of Bishops of the Syro-Malabar Major Archbishopric commenced today at Mount St. Thomas, the headquarters of the Church in Kakkanad. The session opened with meditative reflections led by Father Mar Alex Taramangalam, Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Mananthavady, followed by a solemn celebration of the Holy Communion presided over by Major Archbishop Mar Raphael Thattil. At 2:30 pm, the Father and Head of the Syro-Malabar Church officially inaugurated the synod by lighting the ceremonial lamp, marking the formal beginning of deliberations. This session brings together 52 Synod Fathers, including those serving in India and abroad as well as retired bishops.

In his inaugural address, Major Archbishop Mar Raphael Thattil warmly welcomed the Synod Fathers, inviting them to experience the communion of bishops united in the Holy Spirit. Speaking in the context of India’s 79th Independence Day, he reflected on the nation’s progress while drawing attention to the challenges faced by religious minorities, particularly Christians. He condemned attacks on Church communities, citing injustices suffered by nuns in Chhattisgarh and increasing communal hostility across the country. The Major Archbishop assured the faithful that the Church stands steadfastly with persecuted communities and individuals, emphasizing that crises should never deter the Church from its evangelizing mission. He exhorted the Synod Fathers to confront shortcomings in pastoral and evangelistic outreach, urging them to move forward with courage and unwavering faith, inspired by the example of the Blessed Virgin Mary, who was assumed into heaven.

The Major Archbishop highlighted the importance of reflecting on pastoral reforms and changes in the Church’s administrative and ministerial arrangements. He emphasized that this Synod session should be a moment to deliberate on urgent steps needed to manifest the ecumenical spirit of the Church in all its dimensions liturgical, social, and pastoral. He encouraged the Synod Fathers to adopt an open and generous approach in ministry, fostering inclusivity and dialogue within the Church’s life and activities.

Recognizing the contributions of the venerable fathers celebrating the Jubilee of their priesthood and episcopal service, Mar Raphael Thattil extended heartfelt congratulations and gratitude on behalf of the Church. The Synod, which continues until Friday, August 29, is expected to play a pivotal role in guiding the Syro-Malabar Church’s pastoral vision, strengthening communion among bishops, and charting a path forward in faith, mission, and service amid contemporary challenges.
