Israel to Resume Gaza Negotiations While Preparing Major Offensive on Gaza City

Jerusalem:  Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Thursday that his government will resume negotiations aimed at ending the prolonged war in Gaza and securing the release of hostages, while at the same time preparing for a large-scale military operation to seize control of Gaza City.

Netanyahu confirmed that Israel will send negotiators to renewed talks mediated by Egypt and Qatar. The negotiations are expected to focus on a proposed 60-day ceasefire that includes the release of hostages held by Hamas in exchange for Palestinian prisoners, followed by discussions toward a permanent truce. According to mediators, Hamas has already signaled willingness to accept the framework, which involves releasing 10 living and 18 deceased hostages in return for about 200 long-serving Palestinian prisoners.

Despite the diplomatic developments, Israel’s security cabinet has approved the mobilization of 60,000 reservists and extended the service of an additional 20,000 troops for an imminent offensive on Gaza City. The military has urged hospitals and humanitarian groups in northern Gaza to prepare to evacuate patients and staff to the south ahead of the operation.

The humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate. More than 62,000 Palestinians have been killed since the conflict began, while mass displacement and severe shortages of medical supplies and food persist. Gaza’s already fragile health system is nearing collapse, prompting fears of further civilian casualties should Israel’s offensive move forward.

In Israel, families of hostages have mounted pressure on the government to strike a deal that ensures their loved ones’ release. However, internal divisions remain sharp, with far-right coalition partners warning against concessions to Hamas.

Internationally, human rights groups have voiced alarm at Israel’s planned offensive and the potential for large-scale civilian harm. Diplomats have also cautioned that forced evacuations without adequate safeguards could violate international law.

Netanyahu’s dual-track strategy underscores Israel’s attempt to combine military escalation with diplomatic outreach. The coming weeks are expected to be decisive, as both sides weigh the prospects of a ceasefire against the realities of deepening conflict.
