Kochi: The Malankara Catholic Association (MCA) Church Committee has urged the government to stand firm in protecting the minority rights enshrined in the Indian Constitution. The call came amid growing concern over the rising instances of hostility against Christians across the country.
At a political awareness conference held at the YMCA Hall in Kochi, the MCA formally registered its protest against the escalating persecution faced by the Christian community. The gathering brought together church leaders, jurists, and lay representatives who called for unity and strong action to safeguard democratic values.
The conference was inaugurated by Bishop Dr. Joshua Mar Ignatius, Chairman of the Laity Commission of the Malankara Catholic Church and former President of the Mavelikkara Diocese. In his message, he cautioned that growing intolerance and social fragmentation were pushing the nation backwards. He noted that there is a deliberate attempt to belittle the Christian community a community that has historically contributed to India’s progress in education, healthcare, and social reform. The Bishop called for a “firm and collective response” to resist such divisive forces.
Delivering the keynote, Retired Supreme Court Justice Cyriac Joseph stressed the need to build a value-based political culture. He pointed out that ethical leadership and respect for diversity are crucial for strengthening democracy and ensuring equal rights for all communities.
The session was presided over by MCA Church President Baiju S.R.. State General Secretary of the Kerala Catholic Federation, V.C. Georgekutty, MCA Treasurer Adv. Eldho Pookunnel, Diocese President N.T. Jacob, and Church Clerical Advisors Fr. Mathews Kuzhivila and Fr. George Mankulam addressed the gathering. Women’s Secretary Betsy Varghese, Vice-Presidents Shibu Mathew, Shaji Thomas, and Bino Mathew, along with office bearers Lali Jose and Subhash Vettikattil, also spoke, echoing the call for vigilance and unity.
The conference also featured a training seminar led by Ruble Raj, noted trainer and former principal, focusing on nurturing effective political participation among Christians. Leaders and professionals engaged in public life from within Kerala and dioceses outside the state actively participated, underlining the MCA’s commitment to preparing the laity for meaningful political engagement.
