Zelenskyy Thanks PM Modi for Independence Day Greetings, Invites India’s Role in Peace Efforts

New Delhi: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for extending greetings on Ukraine’s Independence Day and called upon India to contribute actively towards ending the ongoing war through diplomacy and peace initiatives.

In a message shared on social media, Zelenskyy acknowledged Modi’s wishes and stressed the importance of global cooperation in achieving a dignified and lasting peace. He noted that India’s involvement could strengthen international security, not just in Europe but also across the Indo-Pacific and beyond. “We count on India’s contribution,” Zelenskyy said, underlining Kyiv’s expectations of New Delhi’s engagement in peace-building efforts.

Responding to Zelenskyy, Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to dialogue and diplomacy. In his letter, Modi recalled his visit to Kyiv last year and assured that India would extend full support to sincere efforts aimed at securing an early and sustainable resolution to the conflict.

India also made a symbolic gesture of solidarity by illuminating the Qutub Minar in New Delhi in Ukraine’s national colors, blue and yellow, on Ukraine’s National Flag Day, coinciding with the Independence Day celebrations.

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s Ambassador to India, Oleksandr Polishchuk, confirmed that Prime Minister Modi has formally invited President Zelenskyy to visit India. Though the date is yet to be finalized, preparations are underway, and both sides are coordinating the visit. The envoy also emphasized that India’s stance on the war cannot be considered neutral, highlighting New Delhi’s diplomatic influence.

India and Ukraine share a history of strong bilateral relations dating back to the early 1990s, with India recognizing Ukraine’s independence in 1991. In the ongoing conflict, India has consistently advocated for peace and dialogue, maintaining a balanced approach at the United Nations while also engaging directly with both Kyiv and Moscow.

Zelenskyy’s message and the forthcoming high-level interactions signal a potential deepening of cooperation, not only in the context of the war but also in trade, technology, and global diplomacy. The possibility of discussions at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly in September may further shape India’s role in the international peace process.
