Russia Replaces Wagner Group with State-Controlled Africa Corps in Strategic African Move

Moscow: In a major strategic shift, Russia has announced the replacement of the infamous Wagner Group with a new state-controlled entity, the Africa Corps, to oversee its operations in Africa. The move comes nearly two years after the death of Wagner leader Yevgeny Prigozhin and signals Moscow’s intent to assert more direct control over its military and political influence across the continent.

The Africa Corps, operating under the Russian Ministry of Defence, absorbs former Wagner operatives and aims to centralize authority, eliminating the semi-autonomous structure that previously allowed Wagner considerable operational freedom. Analysts say this change is intended to ensure that Russian interests in Africa are directly managed and aligned with Kremlin policy, rather than carried out by a private mercenary group.

Strategically, the Africa Corps is tasked with providing security for African regimes in exchange for access to natural resources and strategic footholds. In nations such as Mali and the Central African Republic, Russian personnel have already been deployed to protect governments and stabilize regions where Russia seeks influence.

While African leaders may view the new arrangement as a source of security, experts caution that the presence of a Russian state-controlled force could undermine sovereignty and increase dependency on Moscow. Critics describe the move as a step toward neo-colonial influence, with long-term implications for political autonomy on the continent.

The shift has also caught the attention of Western powers. The United States, in particular, has begun scaling back its troop presence in Niger, coinciding with the arrival of Russian forces at the same facilities. This development underscores a growing geopolitical contest between Russia and Western nations for influence in Africa.

The establishment of the Africa Corps marks a new era of Russian engagement in Africa, characterized by centralized control and direct state oversight. Observers warn that while it may serve immediate strategic and economic interests, the long-term consequences for African sovereignty and regional stability remain uncertain.
