India Strengthens Quad Ties as PM Modi Prepares for Japan Visit

New Delhi: India is reaffirming its commitment to the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad) as Prime Minister Narendra Modi prepares for a two-day visit to Japan on August 29–30. The visit underscores India’s focus on promoting peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri emphasized India’s eagerness to deepen cooperation with Quad partners, even as discussions continue over a potential Quad summit in India later this year. During the visit, PM Modi is expected to meet Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba to review joint efforts aimed at ensuring a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific. Key areas of collaboration include defense, ship maintenance, and space initiatives, reflecting the growing strategic partnership between India and Japan.

Japan is also expected to announce a major investment plan during PM Modi’s visit, potentially totaling 10 trillion yen (around \$68 billion) over the next decade. The initiative is aimed at enhancing infrastructure development, industrial growth, and technology collaboration between the two countries.

The United States has reaffirmed its support for the Quad, highlighting the alliance’s role in ensuring security and stability in the region. Quad members are also exploring cooperation in critical minerals, a sector of growing strategic importance for both India and Japan.

Following his Japan visit, PM Modi will participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit in Tianjin, China, on August 31–September 1, signaling India’s broader diplomatic outreach in the Indo-Pacific and Eurasian regions.

These developments highlight India’s proactive role in regional diplomacy, emphasizing multilateral engagement and strategic partnerships to address regional and global challenges.
