Kochi: The Syro-Malabar Church has officially declared 2026 as the Community Empowerment Year, unveiling its logo and handbook at the Synod meeting on Tuesday. The initiative, first resolved at the January 2025 Synod, is aimed at strengthening community awareness, participation, and social engagement across Syro-Malabar faithful worldwide.
The newly released handbook, prepared by the Public Affairs Commission of the Church, outlines the objectives, instructions, and step-by-step guidelines to be followed during the year. Major Archbishop Mar Raphael Thattil formally released the handbook, handing it over to Mar Jacob Angadiyam, former Bishop of the Diocese of Chicago. Commission Secretary Fr. James Kokkavayalil presented the detailed empowerment action plan before the Synod.
Archbishop Mar Andrews Thazhath, Chairman of the Public Affairs Commission, explained that the project will roll out in two distinct phases. The first phase, between September and December 2025, will focus on awareness-building through seminars, publications, and parish-level sessions. The second phase, in 2026, will be dedicated to practical activities, including community-based projects, leadership development, and participatory programs designed to empower laity and strengthen social responsibility.
Archbishop Mar Thomas Tharayil serves as the convener of the Public Affairs Commission, with Archbishop Mar Joseph Pamplani, Bishop Mar Remigius Inchananiil, and Bishop Mar Jose Pulikkal as its members. Church Chancellor Fr. Abraham Kavilpurayodothil is an ex-officio member of the Commission.
The Synod also announced that a Major Archbishop’s circular, providing detailed arrangements and directions for the celebration of the Empowerment Year, will be released in the coming weeks. Leaders expressed hope that the initiative would not only strengthen the internal life of the Syro-Malabar Church but also enhance its wider contributions to society.
