Jammu: At least ten people have been killed and several others remain missing after separate incidents of a landslide in Reasi district and a cloudburst in Ramban district of Jammu and Kashmir early on Saturday. Rescue operations are underway in both regions as authorities struggle with difficult terrain and heavy rains.
In Reasi’s Mahore area, a massive landslide struck Bhadder village around 3 AM, flattening a residential house. Seven members of the family, including parents and their five young children aged between 4 and 12 years, were buried under the debris. While some reports described them as feared dead, local officials confirmed that all seven bodies have been recovered. The tragedy has left the remote village devastated, with neighbors joining security forces and disaster teams in the recovery effort.
In Ramban district, a cloudburst around 12:30 AM triggered flash floods in Rajgarh’s Drubla Natna area. Three people lost their lives and two others remain missing after water and debris swept through homes and damaged a school building. Authorities have pressed rescue teams into service to trace the missing residents while also assessing property damage.
The incidents come just days after a deadly landslide on August 26 near the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine route in Reasi killed 34 pilgrims and injured several others. Following that disaster, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha ordered a three-member inquiry committee to investigate the causes, and the pilgrimage yatra remains suspended.
This latest spell of extreme weather has intensified concerns about fragile mountain infrastructure and the growing toll of landslides and cloudbursts during the monsoon season in Jammu and Kashmir. Over 115 people have died across the Union Territory this month alone due to weather-related disasters.
