Kottayam: The Knanaya community was hailed as an indispensable part of the Kerala Church during the 115th Kottayam Archdiocese Day celebrations at St. George Knanaya Catholic Forum Church in Edakkatt. Archdiocese Metropolitan Mar Mathew Moolakkatt, speaking at the inauguration, emphasized that the historical and spiritual contributions of the Knanaya faithful are integral to the identity of the Kerala Church, asserting that any history excluding them would be incomplete and unjust.
The solemn Holy Mass was presided over by Mar Mathew Moolakkatt along with Auxiliary Bishops Mar Joseph Pandarasseril and Geevarghese Mar Aprem, Archdiocese Pro-Protosinchelus Fr. Thomas Animoottil, and other venerable clergy. Changanassery Archdiocese President Mar Thomas Tharayil, delivering the main sermon, highlighted the historical significance of the Edakkatt Church and paid tribute to the late Father Makeel. Father Makeel’s legacy, particularly his Decretum Book and Christian Summary for Faith Training, was remembered as a guiding light for pastoral work and societal engagement, underscoring his enduring influence on the Archdiocese and the broader Kerala Church.
Mar Moolakkatt, during the general meeting following the Mass, spoke of the community’s mission to preserve its uniqueness and traditions. He reminded attendees that the continued existence of the Knanaya community is vital, cautioning against any actions that undermine its identity, and emphasizing the importance of nurturing vocations and strong family foundations. The Metropolitan also noted the community’s missionary zeal and the ongoing fruits of Father Makeel’s sacrifices, encouraging believers to be exemplars of faith both locally and abroad.
The event also recognized individuals who have excelled in various fields over the past year. Pastoral Council Secretary Sabu Karisserikal introduced the talents, and Archdiocese President honored them. Auxiliary Bishop Mar Joseph Pandarasseril welcomed participants, while Auxiliary Bishop Geevarghese Mar Aprem delivered the benediction. Archdiocese Pro-Protosincellos Fr. Thomas Animoottil extended gratitude on behalf of the organizing committee, with contributions and greetings also coming from representatives of KCC, KCWA, KCYL, and Consecrated Communities.
The celebrations concluded with Mar Mathew Moolakkatt lighting the ceremonial candle, symbolizing the enduring faith and unity of the Knanaya community within the Kerala Church. The event underscored the community’s vital role in shaping both the spiritual and cultural landscape of the Archdiocese, reinforcing its legacy for generations to come.
