Alappuzha: The 71st edition of Kerala’s iconic Nehru Trophy Boat Race concluded today at Punnamada Lake, Alappuzha, with Veeyapuram Chundan emerging as the champion. Representing the Village Boat Club, Kainakari, the team triumphed in a thrilling contest against 20 other snake boats.
The final race was marked by synchronized rowing, rhythmic chants of Vanchippattu, and an electric atmosphere as spectators cheered from the lakeside. The event showcased not only athletic prowess but also the cultural heritage of Kerala.
The race was broadcast live on ZEE5 in Malayalam, Hindi, and English, allowing viewers worldwide to witness the excitement.
Inaugurated in 1952 by India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, the Nehru Trophy Boat Race has grown into a symbol of Kerala’s unity and sporting spirit. The Chundan Vallam, or snake boat, remains the most prominent category in the competition.
The victory of Veeyapuram Chundan adds a new chapter to the race’s storied history and sets the stage for intense competition in the coming years.
