Modi Reiterates India’s Commitment to Ukraine Peace Settlement in Call with Zelenskiy

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday reiterated India’s firm support for efforts aimed at bringing a peaceful end to the ongoing war in Ukraine during a telephone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. The discussion, held against the backdrop of continuing hostilities in Eastern Europe, highlighted New Delhi’s intent to remain a constructive voice in the global pursuit of stability and dialogue.

According to officials, President Zelenskiy briefed Prime Minister Modi on the current ground situation in Ukraine, sharing updates on the humanitarian and security challenges that his nation continues to face. Modi, in response, underlined India’s belief that any conflict must ultimately be resolved through diplomacy and negotiation, not prolonged confrontation. He expressed that New Delhi stands ready to support every effort that contributes to restoring peace and stability in the region.

The two leaders also took the opportunity to review the broader contours of India–Ukraine relations. Both sides acknowledged the importance of nurturing bilateral cooperation in areas ranging from trade and technology to education and agriculture. Modi stressed that despite the difficult circumstances caused by the war, there remains strong potential for New Delhi and Kyiv to deepen their engagement in mutually beneficial fields.

India’s stance on the Ukraine conflict has consistently been one of balance neither aligning fully with Western sanctions against Russia nor endorsing Moscow’s actions, but instead advocating for dialogue and humanitarian assistance. Saturday’s call once again reinforced India’s positioning as a neutral yet active participant in international efforts to de-escalate the war.

The reaffirmation also comes at a time when New Delhi is navigating complex geopolitical terrain, balancing its strategic partnerships with Russia, the West, and emerging economies. Modi’s conversation with Zelenskiy thus signals India’s attempt to uphold its traditional foreign policy principle of non-alignment while amplifying its role as a potential mediator in conflict resolution.
