Ahead of Modi Putin Talks, Zelensky Calls PM Modi to Push Peace Dialogue

New Delhi: On the eve of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in China, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a crucial phone conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Saturday. The discussion revolved around the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, with both leaders emphasizing the urgent need for peace and stability.

PM Modi, in a statement on X, reaffirmed India’s consistent stance on dialogue and diplomacy: “We exchanged views on the ongoing conflict, its humanitarian aspects, and efforts to restore peace and stability. India extends full support to all efforts in this direction.”

President Zelensky, in his remarks, revealed that he had briefed PM Modi on his recent talks with former U.S. President Donald Trump and European leaders in Washington. Stressing Ukraine’s willingness to directly engage with Russia, Zelensky said: “We reaffirmed our readiness for a meeting with the head of Russia, though Moscow continues its brutal strikes on civilian areas. Almost two weeks have passed, and Russia has shown no interest in diplomacy only in targeting our people.”

Zelensky praised India’s balanced role and called Modi’s support a critical signal before the SCO summit. He emphasized the importance of a ceasefire as the first step toward meaningful peace negotiations: “The end of this war must begin with silence. No real discussion can happen while our cities are under constant fire.”

The Ukrainian leader also thanked Modi for expressing condolences over recent civilian casualties and highlighted that India could play a significant mediatory role at the summit. He noted: “India is ready to deliver the right message to Russia and other leaders during the meetings. This is essential for peace.”

Beyond the war, the two leaders also touched upon strengthening bilateral relations. Discussions included future high-level visits and preparations for a Joint Intergovernmental Commission meeting to boost cooperation in trade, technology, and education.

This was the second telephonic conversation between Modi and Zelensky in August, reflecting a growing frequency of engagement. The first call earlier this month also focused on peace efforts and India-Ukraine partnership.

PM Modi is scheduled to attend the SCO Summit in Tianjin on Sunday, where he will hold bilateral meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin. With global attention fixed on Modi’s meetings, Zelensky’s outreach comes at a strategically significant moment just as India navigates complex ties with both Moscow and Kyiv against the backdrop of U.S. sanctions and rising tariffs.

The SCO, comprising India, China, Russia, and seven other members, remains a key geopolitical platform where India is expected to balance its diplomacy between great powers, while maintaining its long-standing call for dialogue and peaceful resolution of conflicts.
