Lightning Flood Strands Tourists in Himachal; Keralites Safe, Road Link Expected by Noon

Shimla: Relief has arrived for a group of 25 tourists, including several Keralites, who were left stranded in Kalpa, Himachal Pradesh, after torrential rains and lightning-triggered floods cut off road connectivity. Officials confirmed on Saturday night that the group is safe and not facing any immediate danger, though they have been stuck for three days due to landslides and roadblocks.

The Kinnaur district administration has assured that efforts are underway to restore road traffic, with clearance operations expected to be completed by noon today. Once connectivity resumes, arrangements will be made to move the tourists safely to Shimla.

Union Minister George Kurien’s office confirmed that they have been in touch with state authorities, who assured that road clearance is progressing. Meanwhile, Congress leader and AICC General Secretary K.C. Venugopal also intervened, speaking directly to Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu to ensure urgent assistance for the stranded Keralites.

The tourists, who began their journey from Delhi on August 25 and travelled to Kalpa via Spiti, were caught in the sudden spell of extreme weather. With road access blocked, they reported difficulties in procuring essential supplies like food and water, prompting requests for immediate intervention.

Officials said that once the road is restored, the group will be transported to Shimla, from where further travel arrangements will be coordinated. The administration reiterated that safety measures are in place and rescue protocols will be activated if required.
