Munnar’s Mount Carmel Basilica Launches Hindi Mass for Migrant Workers

Munnar:  Mount Carmel Basilica in Munnar, Kerala, has taken a significant step towards inclusivity by introducing a monthly Holy Mass in Hindi, aimed at serving the large community of migrant workers in the region. The initiative is part of the church’s ongoing effort to address the spiritual needs of its linguistically diverse congregation.

Established in 1898 by Spanish missionary Fr. Alphonse Maria De Los Angeles, Mount Carmel Church was originally founded to serve Tamil-speaking plantation workers. The current structure was completed in 1909, and the church was elevated to the status of a Minor Basilica on May 25, 2024, becoming the first basilica in the high ranges of Kerala.

Recognizing the linguistic diversity of its members, the basilica now holds a Mass in Hindi on the last Sunday of every month. The service has been warmly welcomed by the migrant worker community, attracting a growing number of attendees.

Church officials highlighted that the initiative is intended to provide migrant workers the opportunity to participate in worship in their native language, strengthening their spiritual connection and sense of belonging within the church community.

The introduction of the Hindi Mass at Mount Carmel Basilica is seen as a proactive move towards fostering inclusivity and community engagement, ensuring that all members, regardless of language, can access spiritual services and feel connected to their faith.
