CELAM Launches Pan-American Synodal Ecosystem Project ‘Together’

Rome: The Latin American and Caribbean Episcopal Council (CELAM) has unveiled a major Pan-American initiative designed to strengthen synodality through theological formation and practical engagement. The project, titled Together (Juntos, Insieme), was presented last week to Pope Leo XIV during a private audience by Rafael Luciani, lay theologian and director of CELAM’s Biblical-Pastoral Theological Center (CEBITEPAL). The formal launch will take place during next month’s Jubilee of Synodal Teams.

Building a “Network of Networks”

Developed in collaboration with the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, the Latin American Confederation of Religious Men and Women (CLAR), and the American Synodality Observatory, together aims to weave a “network of networks” across theology and pastoral ministry. Offered in multiple languages, the initiative combines academic training with grassroots programs to bring synodality to life across the Americas.

Training Already in Motion

The first step of the project is a free, large-scale online course, gathering more than 30 Synod experts and participants, including representatives from international processes such as the Italian Synod. Tens of thousands of faithful from across the globe are expected to take part.

The curriculum highlights the key themes of the Final Document of the XVI Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops. Contributors will include Synod leaders such as Cardinals Mario Grech and Jean-Claude Hollerich, along with Sr. Nathalie Becquart XMCJ. Short 10-minute videos produced in several languages will also be made available, transforming the Synod’s teachings into accessible formation tools for parishes, dioceses, and ecclesial movements.

Leaders to Guide the Inauguration

Among those leading the launch are Bishop Lizardo Estrada Herrera, OSA, Secretary General of CELAM; José Luis Loyola, MSpS, President of CLAR; Agbonkhianmeghe E. Orobator, SJ, Dean of the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley; and Father Eric García, Deputy Secretary General of CELAM. Their participation underscores the broad ecclesial and academic cooperation underpinning the project.

Toward a Global Synodal Church

For CELAM, Together represents more than a regional program it is a decisive step in connecting Pan-American theological voices with the universal Church. By fostering collaboration and dialogue across continents, the initiative contributes directly to the third phase of the Synod on Synodality. The journey is expected to culminate in 2028 with the grand World Ecclesial Assembly in Rome, a milestone that promises to highlight the global Church’s shared path of communion, participation, and mission.
