Rome Hosts Formation Course for 192 Newly Appointed Bishops

Rome: The Vatican has opened its annual formation course for newly appointed bishops, welcoming 192 prelates from across the world to Rome for a week-long program of study, prayer, and fraternity. The course, running from September 3 to 11, is designed to equip new bishops with guidance and support as they take up their pastoral responsibilities.

According to the pontifical news agency Agenzia Fides, the program has been divided into two main sessions: 78 bishops will follow a course organized by the Dicastery for Evangelization, while 114 bishops will participate in a track prepared for diocesan leaders. In addition, five bishops from the Eastern Catholic Churches and five from the Roman Curia are also taking part, underscoring the universal reach of the initiative.

The Vatican emphasized that the joint sessions are meant not only for study but also for fostering unity and communion among the global episcopate. The days will include Holy Mass, liturgical celebrations, conferences, and moments of dialogue, allowing the bishops to share experiences and build ties that transcend national boundaries.

A highlight of the gathering will be the collective audience with Pope Leo XIV in the Paul VI Hall on September 11, when the Holy Father will address the participants and encourage them in their ministry.

The tradition of holding study seminars for new bishops began nearly three decades ago, with the purpose of preparing pastors to confront the complex realities of modern Church life ranging from evangelization and interreligious dialogue to social challenges and the demands of episcopal governance.

Beyond the practical training, the course is seen as an important moment of spiritual renewal and fraternity, giving bishops the chance to deepen their awareness that their mission, while rooted in their local churches, remains intimately connected to the life of the universal Church.
