CCBI Western Region Concludes Three Day Seminar on Integral Ecology in Goa

Benaulim: Benaulim witnessed a landmark gathering as the Western Region of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI) hosted a three-day seminar on Integral Ecology from August 29 to 31 at Shanti Sadan. Themed “Hearing the Cry of the Earth and the Cry of the Poor: Translating Laudato Si’ and Laudate Deum into Diocesan Action,” the meet brought together bishops, clergy, and delegates from the dioceses of Amravati, Nagpur, Nashik, Sindhudurg, and Goa to deliberate on practical ways to respond to ecological challenges and climate change within the framework of Catholic teaching.

The event was guided by Bishop Simão Purificação Fernandes, Chairman of the CCBI Commission for Ecology, Western Region, and coordinated by Fr. Bolmax Pereira. In his opening address, Bishop Simão underlined the urgency of the global ecological crisis and called upon parishes to implement concrete measures well ahead of COP30. Fr. Bolmax emphasized the theological foundations of integral ecology, stating, “The cry of the Earth and the cry of the poor are one and the same, demanding an urgent conversion of humanity.”

A highlight of the seminar was the sharing of successful field models. The Goa Diocesan Commission for Ecology showcased their annual “Season of Creation” programme, which mobilizes local communities through tree plantations, clean-up drives, agricultural revival, and celebrations of the unique ecological heritage of host villages. Adding inspiration to the proceedings, the Chicalim Youth Farmers Club (CYFC) presented how their passion for sustainable agriculture has grown into a professional, community-focused initiative. They exemplified how young people can balance studies, jobs, and environmental commitment while creating tangible impact.

The conference also featured a dynamic panel of experts, including environmental lawyer Adv. Richard Almeida, youth activist Shohail Furtado, waste management specialist Godfrey Franklin, and Mr. Orville Dourado, who encouraged delegates, particularly the youth, to become “freedom fighters for the environment.”

On the final day, His Eminence Filipe Neri Cardinal Ferrão celebrated Holy Mass, delivering a homily that underscored humility and service. “Be humble enough to let anyone smaller than you or poorer than you be before you,” the cardinal exhorted, linking spiritual humility with ecological responsibility.

Delegates also strategized the formation of dedicated Ecology Commissions in every diocese, drawing upon the successful model of the Goa DCE. Fr. Bolmax highlighted the importance of including diverse members from marine scientists to financial experts and youth in these commissions to ensure effectiveness and sustainability.

The seminar concluded with a renewed commitment among participants to carry forward the mission of Integral Ecology in their dioceses. By connecting faith with environmental action, the CCBI Western Region has made a decisive step toward embedding ecological responsibility as a core component of its ministry, demonstrating that the care of creation and care for humanity are inseparable.
