Singapore PM Lawrence Wong Reaffirms Confidence in India’s Growth, Calls for Deeper Cooperation

New Delhi: Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has expressed strong confidence in India’s future, describing the partnership between the two nations as one built on trust and a proven track record. Speaking during his official visit to India, Wong emphasized that Singapore’s faith in India is backed by years of growing trade, investment, and collaboration.

The Singaporean leader highlighted that bilateral trade has increased two-and-a-half times since the signing of the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA). He further noted that Singapore has remained India’s largest foreign investor for the past seven years, underlining the strength of economic engagement.

A key focus of his visit is semiconductor cooperation, an area both countries view as critical for resilient and diversified supply chains. Wong announced that Singapore supports India’s ambition to become a major semiconductor hub and is exploring a “green lane” for semiconductor goods. Discussions are also underway to establish a joint skills training center in Gujarat to prepare a skilled workforce for the sector.

The India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable (ISMR), launched in 2022, has emerged as a strategic institutional mechanism for advancing cooperation. Its agenda now spans industrial development, connectivity through maritime, air and digital routes, innovation, and workforce training. Wong stressed that the ISMR provides a roadmap for structured and long-term engagement between the two countries.

On the geopolitical front, the Prime Minister noted that growing trade tensions globally, especially among major economies, have underscored the importance of regional collaboration. He said that a rising India not only contributes to Asia’s resilience but also provides opportunities for neighbors like Singapore to work together for stability under a rules-based framework.

Reports suggest that India and Singapore are preparing to launch a comprehensive roadmap for future cooperation during this visit, with particular attention to technology, connectivity, and skills development.

Wong concluded by reaffirming Singapore’s commitment to deepening its partnership with India, describing it as a relationship rooted in trust, mutual benefit, and a shared vision for regional prosperity.
