Songdo: During the opening of the Global Transparency Forum in Songdo, UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Simon Stiell emphasized the vital role of transparent climate reporting in advancing global climate efforts. The forum, which runs from September 3 to 5, brings together international leaders to discuss strategies for enhancing transparency in climate action.
Stiell noted that transparency has evolved from a technical requirement into a key enabling tool for countries. It helps governments build a strong evidence base, supports the formulation of more ambitious climate policies, facilitates access to climate finance, and accelerates progress toward sustainable development goals.
Over 100 nations have submitted their first Biennial Transparency Reports, representing substantial efforts to compile reliable climate data. These reports help attract investment, guide policy-making, and support the global transition to clean energy and climate resilience.
Transparent reporting has multiple benefits, including promoting economic growth, creating jobs, improving public health, and ensuring more affordable and secure energy. Many countries are also using their reports to identify urgent needs for finance, technology, and capacity-building. The UNFCCC has provided technical support and training to assist developing nations in meeting the requirements of the Enhanced Transparency Framework.
Looking ahead, the UNFCCC plans to release the BTR Synthesis Report later this year, which will assess countries’ progress toward their Nationally Determined Contributions and provide insights into global climate action. Ongoing workshops and training sessions will continue to support nations in improving their reporting processes and aligning with the framework.
The UNFCCC’s efforts underline the importance of transparency in fostering trust, accountability, and collaboration among nations, ultimately driving more effective and inclusive climate action worldwide.
