Beirut: In this week’s edition of News from the Eastern Churches, produced in collaboration with L’Œuvre d’Orient, the region witnesses steadfast faith amid conflict, remembrance of national sacrifice, and moments of respite for religious women far from home.
Amid escalating tensions in Gaza, the clergy of the Greek Orthodox Church of St. Porphyrius have declared, “We will stay,” refusing to evacuate despite orders from the Israeli army. Over five hundred residents, including elderly individuals, children, and the sick, have sought refuge within the church walls.
Israel has intensified its plan for total control of Gaza City, home to approximately one million people, pushing residents toward the already crowded and impoverished southern areas of the enclave. In a show of solidarity, the Latin and Greek Orthodox Patriarchs of Jerusalem issued a joint statement on August 26, reaffirming the clergy’s commitment to “continue to care for all those who are in the church,” emphasizing both humanitarian and spiritual responsibility.
On September 2, the Republic of Artsakh celebrated its Independence Day, and Catholicos of All Armenians, Karekin II, delivered a solemn message of remembrance and hope. Reflecting on the tragedies of 2020 and 2023, marked by war, forced displacement, and the captivity of officials and soldiers in Baku, the Catholicos paid tribute to fallen heroes and called for prayers for the liberation of captives.
He urged the defense of displaced peoples’ rights, the preservation of Armenian spiritual heritage, and the unity of the Armenian community. Karekin II highlighted faith as a beacon for the future, emphasizing resilience, hope, and the ongoing struggle for peace and justice.
Forty-five religious sisters from Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, and Palestine spent several weeks in France this August, taking a much-needed break from their demanding pastoral duties. Since 2023, thanks to L’Œuvre d’Orient and CORREF, French congregations have been opening their doors free of charge to sisters facing heavy workloads and challenging circumstances in their home countries.
The initiative has grown in popularity, with the sisters expressing gratitude for the warm welcome. Their presence brings renewed joy and energy to local communities, highlighting the deep connections between Eastern and Western Catholic congregations and the spirit of international ecclesiastical solidarity.
This week’s news underscores a region of contrasts: faith and courage amid adversity, remembrance of sacrifice, and the nurturing of hope and renewal.
