Kochi: A historic moment unfolded in Pallikkara near Kochi as a new church named after Saint Carlo Acutis was consecrated under the Archdiocese of Verapoly on the very day the young Italian was canonised by Pope Leo XIV in Rome. The ceremony was presided over by Verapoly Archbishop Joseph Kalathiparambil, with the participation of senior clergy, including Vicar Generals Monsignor Mathew Kallingal and Monsignor Mathew Elanjimittam, Chancellor Fr. Abijin Arackal, Fr. Sojan Maliyeckal, Parish Vicar Fr. Rocky Kollamparambil, and forane Vicar Fr. Patrick Elavunkal.
The church is among the first in India to be dedicated to Saint Carlo Acutis, who is revered for his profound devotion to the Eucharist and innovative use of digital media to spread the faith. Acutis, who died of leukaemia in 2006 at the age of 15, was beatified by Pope Francis in 2020 and canonised on September 7, 2025. Known as the Catholic Church’s first millennial saint and popularly called “God’s influencer,” his life continues to inspire young people across the globe.
Construction of the church began in April 2025 on land owned by the archdiocese, and the building was completed within a few months to align with the canonisation ceremony. The church also houses relics of Saint Carlo Acutis, adding spiritual significance to its foundation.
The new parish is expected to serve around 140 families in the region, with regular services to be held every Tuesday and Sunday. A chapel dedicated jointly to Saint Carlo Acutis and Saint Antony is also under construction nearby, expanding the spiritual infrastructure of the community.
The Archdiocese of Verapoly, one of the most prominent Latin Catholic jurisdictions in Kerala, has played a leading role in developing new centres of worship. The consecration of this church marks a significant step in bringing together tradition and modern faith, reflecting Saint Carlo’s legacy of blending devotion with the possibilities of modern technology.
