Mexico Emphasizes Economic Growth Over Conflict Amid Rising Tariffs on Chinese Imports

Mexico City: Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Wednesday clarified that the country’s recent decision to raise tariffs on certain imports, including Chinese automobiles, is aimed at strengthening domestic industries rather than provoking trade conflicts. Speaking at a press briefing, Sheinbaum stressed that the measures form part of a broader strategy to enhance Mexico’s economic resilience and industrial capacity.

The newly proposed tariffs, which could reach up to 50% on some Chinese vehicles, are part of a comprehensive adjustment affecting approximately $52 billion worth of imports. Mexico has targeted goods from countries with which it does not have formal trade agreements, including China, South Korea, India, Indonesia, Russia, Thailand, and Turkey. The government maintains that these duties are essential to protect domestic jobs and support local industries against underpriced foreign competition.

China has voiced concerns over what it describes as “unjustified trade restrictions” but has simultaneously expressed willingness to engage in dialogue with Mexico. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian highlighted that China hopes to work collaboratively while safeguarding its own economic interests against measures it considers unfair.

President Sheinbaum emphasized that Mexico is not seeking confrontation and is committed to open diplomatic channels. She underscored that the country’s focus remains on fostering industrial growth and economic self-sufficiency, rather than responding to external pressures or geopolitical tensions.

While the proposed tariffs await approval from the Mexican Congress, analysts note that their introduction could influence trade dynamics and bilateral relations. Nonetheless, the government’s approach reflects a careful balancing act promoting domestic economic strength while maintaining constructive international engagement.
