Gaza Priest Receives Pope’s Blessing Amid War-Torn City

Gaza City: In the midst of escalating conflict and looming evacuations in Gaza City, Father Gabriel Romanelli, parish priest of the Holy Family Church, described a recent phone call with Pope Leo XIV as “a blessing” and a source of profound encouragement for the local community. The conversation, held on Tuesday, came as Israeli authorities issued orders for residents to evacuate, leaving thousands facing uncertainty and danger.

Father Romanelli, an Argentine missionary serving in Gaza, shared his reflections in a video message, expressing gratitude for the Pope’s personal concern. “We told him we are well, even if the situation remains difficult,” he said. “The Pope gave us his blessing and prayed for us and for peace. He follows everything closely and is committed to ending the war.” His words reflect the closeness and solidarity extended by the Vatican to communities caught in the throes of armed conflict.

The Holy Family parish continues to serve as a sanctuary for approximately 450 displaced individuals, including the elderly, the sick, and young children. “Most of the population does not want to leave,” Fr. Romanelli explained. “Everywhere there is danger, but many want to remain in the city. We try to accompany them and help as we can.” Despite the precarious conditions, the parish strives to maintain a semblance of normalcy, offering shelter, care, and moral support.

Amid the hardship, moments of joy have also punctuated daily life. The parish recently celebrated a wedding and welcomed the birth of a baby boy named Marcos. “In the midst of so much pain, God blesses us with signs of life and joy,” the priest said, highlighting the resilience and faith of the community even in dire circumstances.

Father Romanelli concluded his message with a heartfelt appeal for global solidarity through prayer. “We continue to pray for peace, for the whole of Gaza, for the Middle East, and for the world. May the Lord, through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, grant us the miracle of peace,” he said.

The call from Pope Leo XIV stands as a symbol of hope for Gaza’s residents, reinforcing the universal call to compassion, prayer, and humanitarian support in regions affected by conflict. The parish’s steadfast commitment to sheltering those in need embodies the Church’s mission to provide solace, care, and spiritual strength amidst life-threatening crises.
