Kathmandu: Sushila Karki has officially assumed office as Nepal’s interim Prime Minister, following a historic appointment that marks the first time a woman has held the position in the country. The oath-taking ceremony took place at Shital Niwas, the official residence of President Ram Chandra Paudel.
Karki, a former Chief Justice of Nepal and the first woman to hold that position, brings extensive judicial and administrative experience to the role.
Her appointment follows the resignation of former Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli, who stepped down amid widespread anti-corruption protests and political unrest. The transitional government led by Karki is expected to stabilize the political environment and prepare the country for upcoming elections and governance reforms.
In her inaugural address, Karki emphasized the importance of integrity, transparency, and inclusive governance. She highlighted the need to address corruption, ensure accountability in public institutions, and strengthen the democratic process. Observers note that her leadership represents a significant step toward gender equality in Nepal’s political and judicial spheres.
Political analysts see Karki’s appointment as a move to reassure both domestic and international stakeholders of Nepal’s commitment to political stability and democratic governance. Her tenure, although interim, is expected to focus on key administrative reforms, maintaining law and order, and fostering dialogue among various political factions to reduce tensions.
The swearing-in ceremony was attended by senior government officials, political leaders, and representatives from civil society, underscoring the symbolic and practical significance of her leadership. Karki’s role will be closely watched as Nepal navigates a critical period of political transition, with hopes that her administration will bring stability and renewed confidence to the nation.
