London Braces for Rival Protests Over Immigration as Police Deploy 1,600 Officers

London: London is preparing for one of its largest protest operations in years as thousands are expected to join rival demonstrations over immigration on Saturday. Police have deployed around 1,600 officers, including 500 from forces outside the capital, in anticipation of possible clashes.

The “Unite the Kingdom” march, organised by far-right figure Tommy Robinson, is scheduled to begin near Waterloo Bridge and head toward Whitehall. The march is expected to attract thousands, with some reports suggesting appearances from other controversial speakers.

At the opposite end of Whitehall, campaigners from Stand Up To Racism are staging a counter-demonstration under the banner “March Against Fascism.” Authorities have installed barriers and designated buffer zones to keep the two groups apart, with about 1,000 officers dedicated specifically to policing the marches.

Police have imposed strict conditions on both sides, including restrictions on march routes and assembly points. Breaches could result in arrest. Officials stressed that the operation is aimed at ensuring safety while allowing lawful protests to take place.

The demonstrations come against the backdrop of growing tensions over immigration policy in the United Kingdom. Record numbers of asylum claims and continued small-boat crossings in the English Channel have made the issue one of the most divisive in British politics. Recent protests targeting hotels housing asylum seekers have added to the controversy, with some events leading to violence and arrests.

The government recently appointed Shabana Mahmood as the new Interior Minister, a move seen as significant as the debate over migration dominates the national agenda.

Authorities have warned that while they are prepared to facilitate peaceful protest, any attempts at violence or disorder will be met with firm action.
