Kanjirapally: Bishop Mar Jose Pulikkal, inaugurating the eighth session of the twelfth Pastoral Council of the Diocese of Kanjirapally, underscored the Church’s role in nurturing a society that is just, value-driven, and forward-looking. Addressing clergy, laity, and community leaders, he called for concrete interventions to safeguard secularism, ensure justice for the marginalized, and secure a dignified future for farmers.
“Justice, peace, and inclusiveness must shape our national vision. The Church must remain rooted in the Gospel while inspiring every believer to stand as apostles in the modern world,” Bishop Pulickal said. He emphasized that the Catholic Congress, the community organization of the Syro-Malabar Church, must be strengthened to act as a unifying force in society.
The Bishop further noted that empowering the faithful is not merely a matter of religious commitment but a social responsibility. “The vision of the Church must become our heartbeat. Only then can we create a capable society that contributes to national progress,” he said, urging the faithful to integrate faith, civic duty, and community service.
The session featured a keynote class led by Fr. Justin Mathiath on Community Empowerment in the Modern Era. He stressed the need for the Church to respond proactively to societal shifts, digital challenges, and the growing disconnect among youth.
Senior leaders including Proto-Syncellus Rev. Fr. Joseph Vellamattom, Vicar Generals Rev. Fr. Bobby Alex Mannamplackal and Rev. Dr. Sebastian Kollamkunnel, along with Chevalier Adv. V. C. Sebastian, also addressed the gathering, highlighting the integration of pastoral vision with civic responsibility.
The diocesan administration team Chancellor Rev. Dr. Mathew Shouryamkuzhi, Procurator Rev. Fr. Philip Thatathil, and Pastoral Council Secretary Dr. Juby Mathew coordinated the programs, ensuring the participation of parish representatives across the diocese.
The Bishop’s words reflected a growing recognition within the Church that faith communities must not only nurture spirituality but also actively shape the nation’s social fabric. Protecting secularism, empowering farmers, guiding youth into politics with values, and fostering justice were highlighted as urgent priorities.
The day’s proceedings thus became more than an internal council it was a call to transform faith into action, ensuring that community empowerment becomes the cornerstone of national progress.
