Nigeria Races to Protect Endangered Sea Turtles Amid Pollution and Poaching Threats

Lagos: Conservationists in Nigeria are intensifying efforts to save the nation’s endangered sea turtles, which are under increasing threat from plastic pollution, discarded fishing nets, coastal development, and illegal poaching. The combined pressures have led to a significant decline in turtle populations along Nigeria’s southern coastline.

Chinedu Mogbo, founder of the Greenfingers Wildlife Conservation Initiative, reported a worrying drop in sea turtle numbers. His organization has rescued and rehabilitated over 70 turtles in the past five years, including Olive Ridley, Hawksbill, and Leatherback species. However, without proper marine protected areas and sufficient monitoring resources, accurate population estimates remain uncertain.

Plastic waste and abandoned fishing nets pose serious risks, often leading to injuries and fatalities among turtles and other marine life. Coastal development has also degraded nesting grounds, leaving turtles more vulnerable.

In addition to environmental threats, poaching remains a critical problem. In areas such as Folu near Lagos, sea turtles are hunted for their meat, shells, and eggs, which are used for consumption and traditional rituals. Local vendors report that turtles can sell for up to 90,000 naira each, incentivizing illegal hunting. Conservationists are actively working to intercept these transactions and prevent the sale of endangered species.

Mogbo’s initiative works closely with local fishermen, offering net repair kits in exchange for protected nests or rescued turtles. This approach supports both conservation efforts and the livelihoods of local communities. Despite limited funding, the Greenfingers Wildlife Conservation Initiative continues its mission to safeguard marine biodiversity.

Conservationists are urging the Nigerian government to establish marine protected areas, enforce wildlife protection laws more strictly, and increase public awareness about the importance of sea turtle conservation. The survival of these vital marine species depends on coordinated action between conservationists, local communities, and government authorities.

The struggle to protect Nigeria’s sea turtles highlights the urgent need for a combined effort to address environmental threats, prevent poaching, and preserve marine ecosystems for future generations.
