Kyauktaw Township: At least 19 students were killed in a Myanmar military airstrike targeting a boarding school in Kyauktaw Township, located in the conflict-prone Rakhine State. The victims, aged between 15 and 21, were reportedly asleep at the school when the nighttime attack occurred, according to the Arakan Army, an ethnic armed group active in the region.
The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) confirmed that children were among those killed and injured, though specific numbers were not provided. Communication blackouts imposed by the military junta have prevented independent verification of the attack and restricted contact with local residents.
The strike is part of a broader escalation in Rakhine State, where the junta has intensified operations to regain control ahead of a planned national election in December. The Arakan Army has been fighting for greater autonomy in the coastal province.
According to the shadow National Unity Government, the military has carried out nearly 500 airstrikes nationwide in the past month, resulting in the deaths of over 40 children and causing damage to 15 schools. Between January and May 2025, the military conducted 1,134 airstrikes, a significant increase compared to previous periods.
The United Nations has condemned the attack, citing a growing humanitarian crisis in Rakhine State. Violence and displacement have exacerbated food insecurity and malnutrition, particularly affecting the minority Muslim Rohingya population.
The military junta has not responded to requests for comment. International calls for accountability and an end to attacks on civilian infrastructure are increasing as the situation continues to deteriorate.
