Thiruvananthapuram: The Central Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for several districts in Kerala as heavy rainfall continues to lash parts of the state. Warnings will remain in place for the next five days, with authorities urging residents and fishermen to exercise caution.
For Wednesday, the yellow alert has been declared in Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts. On Thursday, the alert will extend to Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, and Thrissur, with predictions of isolated but heavy downpours across these regions.
Meteorologists have cautioned that thunderstorms are likely in select pockets of the state over the next 48 hours. In its short-term forecast, the department said moderate rainfall can be expected in Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, and Kasaragod within the next three hours.
Alongside the rainfall alerts, a special warning has been sounded for fishermen across Keralaâs coastal belt and beyond. Over the next four days, the seas are expected to remain rough in multiple zones, including the south Konkan coast, Goa coast, southwest Bay of Bengal, Andaman Sea, south Tamil Nadu coast, Gulf of Mannar, and adjoining Kanyakumari waters. Wind speeds are predicted to range from 40â50 kmph, occasionally touching 60 kmph, raising the risk of hazardous conditions at sea.
Officials have advised fishermen to avoid venturing into deep waters during this period and to stay updated on real-time weather advisories. Authorities have also urged the public in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant, particularly in hilly regions like Idukki and Pathanamthitta, which are prone to landslides during intense rain spells.
The ongoing weather system, coupled with seasonal monsoon activity, is expected to influence Keralaâs climate patterns in the coming days, with local administrations preparing precautionary measures in districts under alert.
