Kochi: Major Archbishop Mar Raphael Thattil paid heartfelt tribute to the late Mar Jacob Thoomkuzhy, describing him as a shining example of participatory pastoral leadership whose life was devoted to faith, service, and community development. The Archbishop emphasized Mar Thoomkuzhy’s invaluable contributions to the spiritual and social growth of Malabar, particularly within the Eparchy of Mananthavady which spans Kannur, Wayanad, and Malappuram districts and the Eparchy of Thamarassery, covering Kozhikode and Malappuram districts.
Mar Thoomkuzhy was remembered as a shepherd in the truest sense, walking closely alongside migrant communities and empowering them to build meaningful lives rooted in faith and purpose. His pastoral care was not limited to spiritual guidance but extended to enabling communities to realize their full potential, fostering both personal and collective growth.
As Metropolitan Archbishop of Thrissur, he played a pivotal role in strengthening the Archeparchy’s spiritual and institutional framework. One of his landmark initiatives was the establishment of Mary Matha Major Seminary, which revolutionized priestly formation by integrating practical life skills with rigorous spiritual training a model that continues to inspire clergy education today.
Major Archbishop Thattil highlighted Mar Thoomkuzhy’s warmth and humility, noting that he always saw and nurtured the goodness in everyone he encountered. Even after retiring from administrative responsibilities in 2007, Mar Thoomkuzhy led a quiet, simple life, remaining committed to pastoral service and the core values of love, humility, and dedication.
Expressing profound grief, Mar Raphael Thattil stated that Mar Jacob Thoomkuzhy was “a living embodiment of the Gospel, a gentle and radiant reflection of God’s love.” He extended prayers for the repose of the Archbishop’s soul and joined countless faithful in mourning the loss of a true pastoral luminary whose legacy will continue to guide and inspire generations.
