The Diocese of Mananthavady Remembers the Blessings of Archbishop Mar Jacob Thoomkuzhy’s Pastoral Ministry

Mananthavady: The Diocese of Mananthavady has expressed profound grief at the passing of Archbishop Emeritus Mar Jacob Thoomkuzhy, recalling him as the spiritual father who laid its very foundations and guided it with wisdom, humility, and vision. Appointed as the first bishop of the diocese when it was established in 1973, Archbishop Thoomkuzhy shepherded Mananthavady for 22 years, shaping its spiritual identity and institutional growth before moving on to serve as Bishop of Thamarassery and later as Metropolitan Archbishop of Thrissur.

In its message of condolence, the Diocese highlighted the pain of losing a leader who not only built the Church community but also became an enduring source of strength for generations of faithful. The diocese praised his ability to guide the fledgling Church spread across Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka, nurturing its youthful aspirations in the spirit of the Gospel and laying the foundation for the flourishing diocese that exists today.

Archbishop Thoomkuzhy’s ministry in Mananthavady extended far beyond the ecclesiastical sphere. His pastoral initiatives touched the lives of people across castes, religions, and tribal communities, drawing cooperation from political and community leaders alike. His leadership was marked by simplicity, gentleness, and an openness that won the admiration of all who encountered him.

Among his pioneering contributions, the Wayanad Social Service Society stands as a testimony to his commitment to social justice and the upliftment of marginalized groups. Under his guidance, vital institutions such as St. Joseph’s Mission Hospital, Mary Matha College, Newman’s Parallel College, and numerous schools were established to provide education and healthcare to the poor and vulnerable. His vision was deeply rooted in compassion, ensuring that development reached even the most neglected corners of society.

One of his most remarkable initiatives was the establishment of the Tribal Development Centre at Thirunelli in Wayanad. Archbishop Thoomkuzhy was known for personally visiting tribal villages within the forests, a gesture that demonstrated his closeness to the people and his pastoral concern for their struggles. His care for the tribal population of Wayanad remains etched in the collective memory of the diocese.

Even after his retirement from the Thrissur Archdiocese in 2007, Archbishop Thoomkuzhy maintained a warm and close bond with Mananthavady. He often returned to visit parishes, institutions, and communities, continuing to inspire with his gentle presence and words of encouragement. The Diocese of Mananthavady, in its official statement, expressed deep sorrow at his passing, noting that his absence will leave a painful void. Yet, they also affirmed their gratitude for the enduring blessings his pastoral ministry brought to the land.

The diocese concluded its tribute with prayers for the repose of his soul, entrusting their beloved first shepherd to the eternal embrace of God, while cherishing the memory of a pastor who embodied humility, service, and love.
