CMI Community in Peru Celebrates 50 Years of Missionary Service

Lima: The Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI) monastic community has marked a historic milestone 50 years of its mission in Peru. Since their arrival in 1974, CMI priests have worked tirelessly in parishes across different dioceses, guided by the San Mateo Sub-Region under the St. Joseph Province, Kottayam.

The Golden Jubilee celebrations, which began in September 2024, reached their conclusion on September 17 with a solemn thanksgiving Mass at San Benito Church in Lima. The liturgy was presided over by Monsignor Paulo Rocco, Apostolic Nuncio to Peru. Among the concelebrants and dignitaries were Bishop Jorge Izaguirre Rafael of the Diocese of Chosica and Vicar General Monsignor Victor García Teresa.

The event was attended by Indian missionaries, sisters, and lay collaborators serving in different parts of South America. Their presence reflected not only the long-standing contribution of the CMI congregation but also the deep bonds nurtured between Indian missionaries and the local faithful in Peru.

Rev. Dr. Abraham Vettiyankal, Provincial of St. Joseph Province, Kottayam, led the CMI delegation. He was joined by General Councilors Fr. Martin Mallath and Fr. Biju Vadakkel, Provincial of Bhavnagar Fr. Joseph Kallampallil, South American Coordinator Fr. Joshi Puthussery, and San Mateo Sub-Regional Superior Fr. Binesh Kattakanadayil.

Following the Eucharistic celebration, Rev. Dr. Vettiyankal released the Golden Jubilee Commemorative Book, capturing the journey of five decades of missionary commitment. The book highlights the humble beginnings of the CMI presence in Peru, the challenges they faced in adapting to a new culture and language, and their unwavering dedication to parish ministry, education, and social service.

What began as a small missionary venture in the 1970s has grown into a vibrant chapter of the congregation’s history. Over the years, CMI priests have become trusted shepherds in their parishes, contributing not only to spiritual life but also to education, healthcare, and community development.

As the Golden Jubilee concludes, the CMI community looks back with gratitude and forward with renewed commitment to their mission of service in South America.
