Chicago: Bishop Mar Joy Alappatt of the Archdiocese of Chicago has expressed profound sorrow at the passing of Archbishop Emeritus Mar Jacob Thoomkuzhy, recalling him as a shepherd who lived with humility, simplicity, and a heart filled with compassion.
Born in 1930 into a farming family in Vilakkumadam, Pala, Mar Thoomkuzhy’s early years were marked by migration to Thiruvambady in Kozhikode district. His ecclesiastical journey was equally remarkable, serving as the first Bishop of Mananthavady, later shepherding Thamarassery, and eventually leading the Archdiocese of Thrissur as Archbishop. Beyond pastoral care, he founded several institutions, including Christu Dasi Society, the Sisters of St. Joseph the Worker, and was the founding chairman of Jeevan TV, leaving a legacy that extends well beyond Kerala.
Bishop Alappatt fondly recalled the Archbishop’s warmth and accessibility, noting that the faithful would never forget his smile and gentle presence. “The Bible speaks of a shepherd who calls his sheep by name, and Mar Thoomkuzhy lived that truth. He had the gift of knowing people personally and making them feel valued,” Bishop Alappatt said.
The late Archbishop’s bond with the Thrissur faithful was especially close, as he captured their hearts soon after arriving from Mananthavady in 1997. His leadership, combined with his fatherly love, made him a figure cherished by clergy, religious, and laity alike.
The funeral rites are being held in phases. The first service will take place at the Thrissur Archdiocesan Centre, with public homage at the Basilica of Our Lady of Dolours until 12:15 pm. At 1:30 pm, a funeral procession will proceed through the Swaraj Round before reaching Lourdes Cathedral, Thrissur, where the second phase of the service will be celebrated on Monday, September 22, at 9:30 am. By afternoon, the mortal remains will be taken to the Home of Love Generalate of the Kristu Dasi Sisters in Kottuli, Kozhikode, where the concluding rites will be held at 6 pm.
