Bogotá: Colombia has sounded the alarm over a sharp decline in its birth rate, hosting a major pro-life convention in Bogotá to address the growing demographic crisis.
The convention, held at the Luis Guillermo Vélez Auditorium, was organized by members of the Colombian Congress with the support of political, social, and academic leaders. The event began with prayer and opening remarks stressing that “a country without children is a country without a future.”
According to the National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE), only 445,000 births were recorded in Colombia in 2024 — a 13.7% drop compared to 2023 and a staggering 32.7% decrease from 2015.
Lawmakers and experts at the gathering warned that if the trend continues, the country could face serious challenges to its economic and social stability.
Participants highlighted global demographic shifts, noting that nations such as China, once known for restrictive population control policies, are now actively promoting family growth and the sanctity of life.
Colombia’s Church leaders also welcomed the government’s attention to the issue, stressing the importance of protecting life from conception and supporting families.
The pro-life convention is scheduled to conclude today with proposals aimed at shaping future policies to encourage childbirth and strengthen family support systems.
