New Delhi: In a significant development for the Catholic Church in India, Pope Leo XIV has formally accepted the resignation of Most Rev. Thomas D’Souza, the Archbishop of Calcutta. Archbishop D’Souza, who has led the Archdiocese for over 13 years, steps down after a long and distinguished tenure marked by pastoral care, community engagement, and spiritual leadership.
Born on August 26, 1950, Thomas D’Souza began his ecclesiastical journey in West Bengal, being appointed the Bishop of Bagdogra on June 14, 1997. He received episcopal consecration on January 25, 1998, marking the start of his dedicated service to the Church. His commitment and administrative acumen led to his nomination as Coadjutor Archbishop of Calcutta on March 12, 2011. Following this, he was appointed as Archbishop on February 23, 2012, taking the helm of one of India’s most prominent dioceses.
During his 13-year tenure as Archbishop, D’Souza oversaw significant spiritual and social initiatives across the Archdiocese. He championed pastoral programs, encouraged vocations to the priesthood and religious life, and strengthened the Church’s presence in education, healthcare, and community development. Under his guidance, the Archdiocese flourished, with numerous initiatives aimed at uplifting marginalized communities and fostering interfaith dialogue in the culturally diverse city of Calcutta.
The acceptance of his resignation marks the end of an era for the Archdiocese, leaving behind a legacy of compassionate leadership and tireless service. While details of his successor have not yet been announced, the faithful of Calcutta express gratitude for Archbishop D’Souza’s dedication and commitment to shepherding the local Church through a period of growth, transformation, and spiritual enrichment.
