Mohanlal to Receive Prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award for Lifetime Contribution to Cinema

New Delhi: In a moment of national celebration for Indian cinema, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting announced on Friday that legendary Malayalam actor Mohanlal will be conferred with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for the year 2023. The announcement, made on the Ministry’s official social media handle, cited the recommendation of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award Selection Committee and lauded Mohanlal for his “iconic contribution to Indian cinema.”

The award, considered the highest honour in Indian film, will be presented to the 65-year-old actor during the 71st National Film Awards ceremony on September 23, 2025. The Ministry’s statement celebrated Mohanlal’s illustrious career, noting his unmatched versatility, relentless dedication, and enduring influence across generations of filmmakers and audiences.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also extended his congratulations through a social media post, highlighting Mohanlal’s excellence across Malayalam, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Hindi films. “Shri Mohanlal Ji epitomises excellence and versatility…His cinematic and theatrical brilliance across mediums is truly inspiring,” the Prime Minister wrote, praising the actor’s contribution to Kerala’s cultural heritage and Indian arts at large.

Mohanlal’s cinematic journey spans over four decades, encompassing more than 350 films. Renowned for his effortless screen presence and range, he has delivered memorable performances in films such as Thanmathra, Drishyam, Vanaprastham, Munthirivallikal Thalirkkumbol, and Pulimurugan. His accolades include two National Film Awards for Best Actor, nine Kerala State Film Awards, and numerous international recognitions. In addition, he was honoured with the Padma Shri in 2001 and the Padma Bhushan in 2019.
The Dadasaheb Phalke Award, named after Dhundiraj Govind Phalke the father of Indian cinema is conferred for lifetime achievement in the field of film. The 2023 award, delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, now formally recognises Mohanlal’s extraordinary impact on Indian cinema. Last year, veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty received the prestigious honour, continuing a tradition of celebrating the country’s cinematic legends.

Mohanlal’s recognition reaffirms his status as one of India’s most versatile and celebrated actors, whose artistic contributions continue to inspire filmmakers, performers, and audiences across generations.
