Kenyan President Ruto Urges International Action to Resolve Haiti Crisis

New York: Kenyan President William Ruto addressed the United Nations General Assembly on Monday, emphasizing that the ongoing crisis in Haiti “can and must be solved.” Speaking at a high-level meeting on Haiti, Ruto called for urgent, coordinated international efforts to stabilize the country and support humanitarian and security operations.

President Ruto highlighted the challenges facing the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS), which was established by the UN Security Council in October 2023. As of June 2025, fewer than 1,000 personnel, mostly from Kenya, have been deployed—well below the target of 2,500 troops. He noted that logistical issues, transportation difficulties, and inadequate equipment have hindered the mission’s effectiveness. Ruto specifically criticized the condition of some vehicles provided by the United States, saying many were second-hand and prone to breakdowns in high-risk areas.

While acknowledging U.S. support in providing transportation, Ruto urged for better-quality equipment and more predictable international assistance. He also outlined the proposed Gang Suppression Force (GSF), backed by the United States and all 32 member states of the Organization of American States. The GSF would comprise more than 5,500 personnel and have a broader mandate to restore security in Haiti, significantly larger than the current MSS deployment.

Ruto stressed the urgency of action, noting that the MSS mandate is set to expire on October 2, 2025, while gang violence continues to threaten stability in the country. He called on the international community to work together to ensure the next phase of intervention is well-resourced, effective, and capable of addressing both security and humanitarian needs.

The Kenyan president’s appeal underscores the critical need for coordinated international efforts to support Haiti’s fragile security situation, strengthen institutions, and provide necessary aid to its citizens.
