Hong Kong Braces for Super Typhoon Ragasa as City Shuts Down

Hong Kong:  Hong Kong is on high alert as Super Typhoon Ragasa, the strongest tropical cyclone of 2025, approaches the city with sustained winds reaching up to 220 km/h (137 mph). The Hong Kong Observatory has issued a Strong Wind Signal No. 3, expected to be raised to Signal No. 8 by 2:20 p.m. local time, prompting widespread closures and disruptions across the region.

Authorities have canceled approximately 700 flights at Hong Kong International Airport and plan to suspend all passenger flights for 36 hours starting Tuesday evening. Public transportation, including ferries and buses, is expected to halt operations as the typhoon nears.

In preparation for the storm, all schools and many businesses in Hong Kong have closed. Retailers have reported a rush of customers buying essential supplies, resulting in shortages and increased prices.

Neighboring regions are also taking precautionary measures. Macau has activated emergency shelters and evacuation plans. In Shenzhen, China, authorities have ordered the evacuation of 400,000 residents, while Taiwan has relocated over 7,600 residents from vulnerable coastal areas.

The typhoon is expected to bring heavy rainfall, strong winds, and sea surges with water levels rising up to five meters in some areas. Officials warn that Ragasa could cause damage similar to Typhoons Hato in 2017 and Mangkhut in 2018, which led to extensive property destruction.

Authorities have urged residents to stay indoors, secure loose objects, and avoid coastal areas due to the risks of flooding and storm surges. Emergency services remain on high alert as the situation continues to develop.
