New York: India has emphasized its commitment to maintaining strategic autonomy and freedom of choice in global economic and geopolitical matters, as External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar addressed concerns over inconsistent trade practices by major powers.
Speaking on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly, Jaishankar highlighted the challenges posed by rising protectionism, unpredictable tariffs, technology restrictions, and coercive supply chain practices. He pointed out that such measures by countries like the United States and China undermine trust in the international system and disproportionately affect nations in the Global South.
Jaishankar stressed the importance of “de-risking” global supply chains by reducing overdependence on any single market or supplier, especially in critical sectors like technology and minerals. He cited lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic, when wealthier countries prioritized their own populations, leaving resource-poor nations struggling for essential supplies.
The minister’s remarks also come amid ongoing trade negotiations with the United States, where India continues to seek fair treatment regarding tariffs, market access, and regulatory concerns. India has also faced pressure over its energy trade with Russia, with Jaishankar asserting that New Delhi will make decisions based on national interests while calling for dialogue rather than coercion.
Highlighting the need for a more representative global order, Jaishankar said that India will not allow its policies to be dictated by a few powerful nations. He reiterated that New Delhi’s approach is rooted in diplomacy, collaboration with like-minded countries, and efforts to strengthen the resilience of domestic industries and supply chains.
These statements underline India’s growing assertiveness on the international stage, balancing its engagement with major powers while safeguarding its sovereignty and economic independence.
