Death Toll in Philippine Quake Rises to 72 as Aftershocks Hamper Rescue Efforts

Cebu: The death toll from the powerful earthquake that struck central Philippines has climbed to 72, with nearly 300 people injured, as rescue teams struggle against hundreds of aftershocks and damaged infrastructure.

The 6.9-magnitude quake, which jolted Cebu and surrounding provinces on Tuesday night, has left entire communities reeling. Authorities reported that dozens remain missing, raising fears the number of casualties could still rise. Thousands of residents have been displaced, many staying in makeshift shelters or sleeping outdoors due to fears of further tremors.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology confirmed more than 2,600 aftershocks since the initial quake, some strong enough to cause additional damage. The shallow depth of the quake magnified its destructive impact, toppling homes, bridges, and government buildings. In San Remigio, a sports complex collapse during a basketball game killed several people, adding to the tragedy.

Power grids across parts of the Visayas region were disrupted, cutting electricity to the islands of Leyte, Samar, and Bohol. Some local governments, including San Remigio, have declared a state of calamity to speed up relief and rehabilitation. Schools and government offices in affected areas remain closed pending structural safety inspections.

Rescue operations are being hampered by blocked roads, damaged bridges, and persistent rains. Emergency crews are using heavy equipment to clear debris, while volunteers are assisting in distributing food, water, and medical aid. The national government is considering whether to seek international assistance to bolster the ongoing relief mission.

This disaster is now the deadliest earthquake in the Philippines since 2013, when a tremor in Bohol claimed more than 200 lives. With the country sitting on the Pacific Ring of Fire, experts warn of continued seismic risks and stress the importance of building resilience in quake-prone communities.
