Drone Sightings Force Munich Airport to Suspend Flights, Thousands Affected

Munich:  Munich Airport faced significant disruption after multiple drone sightings forced authorities to suspend operations overnight, affecting nearly 3,000 passengers.

The airspace was restricted at 10:18 p.m. local time on October 2, prompting the grounding of 17 departing flights and the diversion of 15 incoming flights to nearby airports, including Stuttgart, Nuremberg, Vienna, and Frankfurt. Passengers were left stranded in terminals, where the airport and airlines provided blankets, food, and drinks while authorities managed the situation.

Operations resumed early on October 3, with the first arrivals expected at 5:25 a.m. and departures at 5:50 a.m. Officials confirmed that the drones caused no damage or injuries, but investigations are ongoing to determine their origin, type, and the individuals or groups responsible.

This incident is part of a growing pattern of drone disruptions across Europe, raising concerns about airport security and the potential use of drones for harassment or hybrid threats. Authorities are reviewing anti-drone measures and airspace defense systems to prevent future incidents.
